Captured in a split second
I can roam around for a day without finding it. First I have to let go of all photographic expectations. To be open for the moment, for the combination of a lamppost, a neon light, two people in a portico and how the light falls, for the moment of that intense feeling: this is it! After a moment the feeling may have already evaporated.
So, I decide in a split second, set up my (technical) camera and shoot. Thus preventing alienating myself from the pure experience of that moment. I must be firm. My brain continuously wants to make the image more beautiful: one step to the left, just wait till that car has removed itself from the frame... I spoil it that way. Therefore I work without a viewfinder. Intuitively. Only after the image has been developed I see what I have captured. Sometimes I am disappointed because an orange taxi got before the lens at exactly the wrong moment: a fat orange stripe... Only later do I begin to find the photo more and more beautiful.
And rightfully so as it was not planned, but real: the camera registered the moment as it was. Reality is always more interesting.
